Jo,

Not sure we have connected before or not. My name is Larry Root. Eli is my gg-grandfather and you are correct that Mary Jane's aunt Chaney was married to Charles. Have lots of info if you need some. I am trying to chase down Charles ancestory. Have reason to think his father was the son of Robert Nelson but dont know what his fathers name is. There is a Robert Nelson from Bourban County that had four sons that settled in Switzrland County In. about the time Charles was born. He came Rowan County In. His sones names were Charles, Nathan, Joseph, Samuel(wife Mary Parsons) and John. Joseph and John died in Switzerland County and a couple of the others lived there for a while too.

The other possibility is a Samuel Nelson son of Joseph Nelson. Samuel born in 1773 married to Ann Parsons, cant prove she is related to the above wife of Samuel in 1st paragraph, had a son named Charles born about the right time but dont know where. Samuel had a son named George Washington that was born in Switzerland County on 10 Dec 1820. This is another possibility.

But that our charles was probably born in Switzerland County to one of these people, they are all probably related some how, is yet to be proved but hope to have the tools in a couple of weeks. Will include all the things I have collected on Charles so far:

Charles Nelson was named patentee on Feb 29, 1836 along with Jacob Carver, NE 1/4, sec 19, twp 18, rnge 4E, 160 acres. Jacob Carver was also patentee on Feb 25 1836, S 1/2, lot 1, NW 1/4,sec 19, twp 18, rnge 4E, 40 acres. Would this be your Jacob. I got this info from the land office in Sagamon County,Illinois

BIRTH: Most likley born in Indiana

During the Mexican War which started in May 1846, a group of men from Macon County, Illinois, was formed to fight. George W Nelson was the 4th Corporal in Company C and Charles Nelson was a volunteer. George was killed in battle in April 1847

This census was transcribed by Pat Hageman from microfilm M704, roll # 64. It lists heads of households with columns for age groups for others in the household. One group of columns for free white males, and one for free white females. There were other col., but I have not included them here. The breakdown of the ages in these columns are: under 5; 5-under 10; 10-under 15; 15 to under 20; 20 to under 30; 30 to under 40; 40 to under 50; 50 to under 60; 60 to under 70; 70 to under 80; 80 to under 90; 90 to under 100; 100 and older. The order has been alphabetized so that it would be eaiser for you to see if your ancestor is in Macon County. Where any information was uncertain, it is underlined. Since the last age group was never used, it has been dropped from the table below. Please remember that what is below is not a complete list of all of the residents of Macon County in 1840. Ther are names that had ink blotches over them, the corners of some sheets were torn off, etc. So, some names could not be included.

This census was completed 24 Oct 1840 and states total inhabitants of Macon Co, Indiana as 3,038

In "History of Switzerland County, Indiana" it states that the Nelsons were also "squatters," and came over from Kentucky about 1800, several families of them--Charles, Samuel, John and Nathan. Further on in the paragraph it states "Aaron Cochran was a cotemporary of the Nelsons, and married into the family". Is there anyone researching these families that resided in this county in the 1800's? Would appreciate any information on the above Nelsons'and or connection to the Cochran family. Thank you.

To whom it may concern: John Houze Jr. died in Swit Co IN 1887, married Sarah Nelson daughter of John Nelson in the County where Crawfordsville is the County seat, Memory says Montgomery. That is where the Nelson's who were in Swit Co in 1800 settled by the 1820's

Trying to find the parents of Matilda Nelson married to William F. Kelso and Sarah Nelson married to Joseph Kelso

I have a Sarah NELSON living in Switzerland Co. She was born about 1807 in Ladoga, IN and died about 1870 in Switzerland Co. She married John Henry HOUZE, Jr in 1827. I don't know who her parents were yet. Do you have any info on her?

12       F       xi.       Mary NELSON was born 1775 in prob Ky. She died 1815 in Prob Adams Co, Ohio.

Mary married Joseph MCNEIL in Bourbon Co, Kentucky. Joseph was born about 1770 in prob Ky. He died 1840 in Adams Co, Ohio.

"The Kentucky Land Grants" Jillson lists McNeal, Joseph and John as
grantees of 400 acres in 1789 within Nelaon County on the Rolling
Fork.
"Master Index Virginia Surveys and Grants 1774-1791" reveals that
James Kelly and Mary Anne were responsible for the survey in order to
provide property for Joseph and John McNeil and their heirs. The Land
Office Treasury Warrant No. 4517 was in the name of Mary Ann McNeil
for 400 acres in Nelson County, dated 1 Apr 1780. The survey, no.
7776, begins by stating it is for James Kelly and Mary Anne, his wife,
formerly Mary Anne MaNei. The concluding sentence reveals that the
tract of land is being signed over to Joseph McNeil and John McNeil,
sons of James McNeil, for value recieved 27 Mar 1789. The Grant, dated
17 May 1790, repeats the information regarding the relationships.
"Virginia Land Records" p 787 "8-18-1795 Book C p 234 Joseph McNeil,
Bourbon Co, Ky (Heir at law of James McNeil dec'd), to William
McClanahan of Botetourt Co. of Virginia 400 pounds current Va. paid to
Jonathan McNeil and Mary McNeil, Executor and Executrix of James
McNeil, dec'd. Tract of land, County of Botetourt, Waters of Current
Creek, branch of Roan Oake."
"Botetourt County, Virginia:Early Settlers" James McNeil died in
1778. His father was Neal McNeil, whose wife was named Mary. James
recieved land on 5-11-1773, consisting of 107 acres on Tinker Creek,
from his father, Neal McNeil. The property was part of a larger tract
acquired by Neal McNeil on 5-12-1770, of 325 acres, waters of Carvins
Creek. He gave part of that to James McNeil (the above mentioned 107
acres) then sold the remainder (218 acres) to William McClanahan on
9-9-1779 Joseph also sold land to McClanahan 8-18-1795. The Will of
James McNeil provides that the property was to go to his sons, Joseph
and John
