That's very interesting. I have seen references to Edward Jr's wife as Mary Morton, but have not seen any documentation. The Mary who was Marshall Morton's daughter is said to have married first a Joshua Thompson, and second Jones Evatt. It would not seem that our Mary Morton would be the same person, but possibly a cousin? I feel certain they were closely related, since the Mortons and Nelsons seem to have traveled together from SC, at least.
I'm also not certain about why Lindsey would have named William Nelson as his grandfather. Edward, George and William were listed in the 1790 Census (Pendleton, SC), and only Edward and George in 1810 (1800 Pendleton has only George and Lewis Nelson), so it is possible that William died, leaving a young son to be brought up by his brother Edward. Edward the younger is usually referred to as Edward Nelson Jr in Blount County records, but it is possible the designation does not mean that he was the son of Edward Sr, but rather a nephew. I believe the term "Jr" in those days was used simply to designate a younger family member with the same name.
Thanks for the information, Dawn. Do you know if it is possible to obtain a copy Lindsey's application?
