Jonathan, I believe the Thomas Nelson you refer to as born 1781 in Stokes County is my 4th great grandfather. Sometime before 1850 families of Stones, Carrows, and Nelsons move to Kanawha County area in what is now Boone County, WVa. My Thomas Nelson was born in Stokes County, NC about 1783, married 21 January 1810 in Stokes County to Clarissa Nunns. Many of the Nelson names in the 1850 and 1860 Boone County census are same (i.e. Elijah, Greenville, Jordan etc.) as those on your list. Thomas and Clarissa Nelson had a daughter, Clarissa , sometimes just referred to as Clara (b: March 1827 in Stokes and died in 1912 in Boone County. Clara married John Carrow (1822-22 November 1882 @ Comfort, Boone County. Their daughter Minerva (1860-1946)was my great grandmother. Do you know if these Nelsons, Carrow, Nunns, Martins had any Indian blood? Seems quite likely Cherokee. Some of my relatives are on rolls. Has to be thru Minerva's ancestry.
For your info, 1860 Boone census taker made a very good mistake. He ask what county and state they were born in. Big help to us that are searching, shows Stokes County several times. If you find out who Thomas Nelson's (b:1781)parents are, please let me know. If I can be of any help to you, please let me know.
