Nelsen, Carl C., b 1854 Denmark

Searching for information on My great grand father Carl Christian Nelsen, Jr., b. 3/26/1854, Schelswig-Holstein, Duchy, Denmark, and d. 3/24/1931, Hammond, LA. He married Augusta Hannah Brinker (also born in Denmark according to the census) in about 1878, in Illinois and they moved to Morehead, Minnesota, about 1880. I found them in the 1880 census for Illinois and the 1900 census for Louisiana.
Carl came to America about 1864 and lived with a sister in Balitmore, MD before moving West.
Many people tell me the spelling (Nelsen) of the name may be wrong, but that is what I have. Some of the family go by Nelson. The 1900 census states he was born in Denmark, however he spoke German. I understand Denmark uses "sen" not "son". Also, I am trying other versions: Nelsen, Neilson, Neilsen, Neilsson, Neilssen, Neilson, Neilsen, Nehlsen, and I am sure there are others.

Any information or leads that might help me find more about Carl or Augusta will be appreciated.
