Listed in the 1850 Northumberland Co Census........age 50....owned $17100 worth of real estate.
In 1826, was part owner with his brother Roysten , of a store in Heathsville, VA called J. D. Betts & Co.Continued to run the store after his brother’s death in 1841. In 1852, He was allowed to buy the lots on which the store and bale house(lot # 20) stood.By 1866, the bale house was gone, and in its place had been erected an office building which was occupied by T. Edwin Betts. At this time, John D. Betts sold this property to T. Edwin Betts, his son. When T. E. Betts died in 1880, he left his law office to his sister, Estelle. It seems probable that the office was used by Estelle’s husband,Lloyd T Smith, until his death in 1905.In 1908, E Hugh Smith began using the office altoungh his mother retained ownership until her death in 1933.in her will, she bequeathed it to her son.In the 1940’s the building was used as a law office by Hugh Smith’s nephew, Robert H Chilton Jr.In 1967, when Hugh Smith wrote his will, he left the office to his sister Genevieve, with the exception of "the lower east room" which he gave for her life to his wife, Maude Nelms Smith. However, Genevieve predeceased Judge Smith, so the office went to Smith’s Widow. From her estate, the building went to Benjamin Humphries. In the division of John D.’s estate , after his death in 1882, the store property was alloted to his son Luther R. Betts, who continued its operation until his death in 1913.However, in 1907, the old store house burned to the ground. It was rebuilt almost immediately, and that building still stands today.
All of his sons served in the civil war.
