Thank you, Keith. When you say Nelmeses came from there, did you mean from Forest of Dean or from Sharpness? GGrandfather did say "barkley" (as my father remembers it), but I wonder if people wandered back and forth across the river, or if perhaps he worked at Sharpness just before coming to the US. Possibilities for Charles and his brother Philip are two "servants" 14 (or 16) and 9 years old on a farm in Flaxley in the 1861 census. Very faint on the microfilm, so hard to be sure of the details. There is also a William Nelmes, visitor, not any connection that I've found yet.No other members of the family seem to be around.
I still need to do a little more work in MA, then hope to get to Glos sometime to visit these places.
