The problem is there was more than one Abraham Nelles in the same area. I am aware of the Rev. Robert Sampson records showing 1817: Nov. 9. John Nelles, natural son of Abraham Nelles and Elizabeth Steinhoof, Grimsby. Facts: John Abraham Nelles born in 1794 and died in 1881 at age 87. He actually was married Feb 1818, the brides mother's name was Elizabeth. I have yet to see the original Sampson document, just a translation which could be incorrect. Also it is possible that Elizabeth Lewis was married previously to someone named Steinhoof. Abraham's will is clear that John's mother is a sister of Levi Lewis. So the Steinhoof is either her previously married name or the record is not my Abraham Nelles. I have 5 of Levi's sister's unaccounted for Elizabeth, Keziah, Marce, Anna and Mary. The other siblings I have information on. You should also not rely on the Annals of the Forty as much of the information has been found to be incorrect, but it is a good springboard for searching. I have been researching the Lewis line for many years (you can find some of the info on my website and hopefully by next year in my family history book which is currently in the assembly stages) as I am trying to finish off the missing pieces, one of the missing pieces is to figure out the mystery from Abraham's will. You might want to look at the book Nellis - Nelles Immigrants From the Palatinate 1710 it shows Abraham and Elizabeth Lewis and son John, as well as his marriage and children from Catherine Ball. Here are snippets from the will: I Abraham Nelles of the Township of Grimsby County of Lincoln, District of Niagara & Province of Upper Canada................. ............I give, devise and bequeath unto John A. Nelles my son by a sister of the late Levi Lewis deceased a part of my Grand River Tract beginning at the lower line of said tract on the bank of the Grand River, and running up the said River opposite the North West end of his present barn, and running back the same width to the rear line together with the Island in front of said tract of land containing altogether 300 acres be the same more or less to his heirs and assigns forever. I also give half a chain long the Western line of said parcel or lot of land herein given to John A. Nelles,..... ..... I wish my son Henry to have my sword sash & epaulets, & the remainder of my wearing apparel be equally divided between my sons Henry, William & John A. Nelles............... The will mentions leaving property to his children and mentions "then southerly up the mountain to the lands of John Beamer" or "extending up the mountain to the lands of John Beamer from the main road." I point out John Beamer as he is married into the Lewis family. No where in his will does he mention a wife by name. Only reference to a wife at all is the my son by sister of Levi Lewis. others mentioned in the will: "my son William Henry Nelles" "my said son Henry William Nelles" "my eldest daughter Maria Elizabeth Sampson" "my daughter Margaret Nelles" "my daughter Hellen Priscilla Racey" "my daughter Catharine Matilda Nelles" "my Grand daughter Maria Eliza Sampson" "my Grand daughter Margaret Dorothy Sampson" "my four daughters, Maria Elizabeth, Margaret, Hellen Priscilla,& Catharine Matilda" "Grandson John Coleborn Nelles" "my daughter Matilda" "my Grandson Thomas F. Sampson" "my brother William's Farm" "bequeath unto William M. Ball" "William M. Ball of Niagara" "bequeath unto James Cummings Nelles, son of the Rev. A. Nelles" "be given to Thomas F. Sampson," "appoint Abraham Nelles, Clerk of Grand River, Thomas Racey of Dundas, Esquire, James Chep [?] of Ancaster, William M. Ball of Niagara and my son Henry William Nelles of Grimsby Esquires Executors to this my Last Will and Testament," In the Codicil "appoint Mr. Elijah Nelles of Woodstock one of the Executors in conjunction with the others to my Will" For his will you will have to get it from the archives--This might help you find it: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/ENGLISH/guides/rg_213_1812_records.htm F 543 Abraham Nelles family fonds.
