Dewitt wrote "Nellis Family Album 1688-1888" , a book about his branch of the Nellis Family, when he was about 39 years old shortly after he had lost both of his parents. D. C.'s name is occasionally written as James D. C. Nellis. His parents were Margaret Spraker and James Nellis. The story was wrtten about Margaret's parents.

DC was a judge in Tokepa. I have seen the story which was probably originally printed in type and distributed among family members. His Album was professionally bound and published. I have a copy. An original is in the NY State Library, Albany. A variety of later hand typed editions made the rounds in the family. DC and his daughter's also published a couple of travel articles.
