News article: James Hector, his wife, and 9 of his children left Walkerton, Ontario by covered wagon to follow his brother Charles to Scotland, SD in the USA. They crossed the James River at Maxwell's dam. The journey took 37 days, and when they arrived they lived in a house made of mud, had a bare earth floor and a thatched roof. They burned twisted hay for heat, ate prairie chickens and jack rabbits. The entire family worked the farm, the younger boys led the team of plow oxen by riding a horse ahead of them guiding them around the ends of rows. Flax and other grain was sown, bound, and gathered by hand. During the great blizzard of 1888, Dave, Walter, and Alex stayed in the schoolhouse with their classmates and their teacher, Miss Belle Holt. Five of the children, Dave, Walter, Janet, Alex, and Becky remained in the community. (News of Old From Scotland History, Nelles Family Arrives by covered wagon in 1879) ®2
