I am posting as a new message the exchange between Leonard Higdon and me, because otherwise most of you won't see it, since it landed on page 3 as responses to an original post from 1999. It's long, but I hope other readers will be able to chime in, since there are a lot of information and questions here.

From Leonard Higdon,
If U look in Barry Co Missouri census you'll find my C.E. Neill, Peter's Brother, and his family. The Neill's came in a large group first to McMinn Co.Tenn, then over the river to Hamilton..Lotsa records in McCminn Co.My G-Grandfater was JOHN MCKINZIE Neill and (so Fam says) was named after his mother Ann McKenzie, kin to Asa McKenzie who married daughter of another Brother of Peters(senior moment)who first came to Texas.John M Neill's father was John Neill of Burke Co NC,Brother to William Neill,James Neill,Etc. all sons of William Neill who came frome Chester Co,Pa.They were quakers who left the faith.John Neill came to Burke Co.Nc thru Virginia where his cousins had already immigated, where he met sarah Duckworth, married her, and came on to NC with her and a very young Brother,John Duckworth.(capt.RVS).The duckworths claimed John and John were Double Cousins.I suspect when John Neill died, his widow sarah married his brother William, but it's only Speculation.Williams will lists an unknown sarah as wife.

From me, dated this morning:

Hi, Leonard,

Wow, you really provided some missing links for me! Thank you SO much for the information. I've spent the last several days trying to fill in the additional information, look for the McKenzies you wrote about, and get a better handle on the Duckworth, Neill, and McKenzie intersection before responding.

I had been trying for some time to chase down the relationship with Chancey E. Neill, to no avail. It only needed your confirmation that he and George D. Neal were Peter and John's brothers to fill in that blank. That was a wonderful bit of news. Could you please point me towards any documentation that you're aware of? I am not aware of any will left by John Neill, but if there is one, I'd love to order a copy.

Have you found that Chancey E. Neill was sometimes miswritten on the census reports as Cheney E. Neill, female, or was she, in fact, a different family member? If so, I've been unable to place her.

And just to be clear, your ggrandfather was John McKinzie Neill, son of Chancey E. Neill, grandson of John Neill, NOT John McKenzie Neill, son of John Neill, i.e., that would make John M. Neill m. Martha C. Moore your 2x great-granduncle, yes? I just want to be sure I read your post correctly and have the relationships right. You had written "my C.E. Neill, Peter's Brother" and I understood you to be in his line. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have C.E. Neill's wife to be Martha Matilda Southard (sometimes spelled Suthard), yes?

After reading your post, I had to go back through my database to see where I had originally gotten the middle name of "Macklin" for my 3x great-granduncle John M. Neill. It was from a family tree posted on Ancestry, with the same middle name of Macklin for his son William M. Neill, but without a source listed. Have you ever been able to find any documents that list the middle name McKenzie for John and Ann's son? I've been looking hard and not able to find it. But if the only thing we have is family tradition, then I'll change the name and cite the family tradition. Sometimes that's the best we can get! Anybody else out there with information?

Now that I knew where to look (g), I found Asa McKenzie (1838, Arkansas; d. 17 Dec 1866) m. abt 1832 Burke County, NC, Frances Emaline (Effie) Neill/Neal, dau/o George D. Neal and Hope E. Southard.

I had no luck, unfortunately, tying together Ann (Nancy) McKenzie and Asa McKenzie. Do you know what the relationship was? I agree that circumstantially they would seem to be related. I show Asa McKenzie's line to be:
parents: John James McKenzie and Dorcus LNU
gparents: Lacy McKinzie, Sr. and Nancy Nanly James
ggparents: Alexander McKinzie and Sarah Dalton
Rev. John M. James and Clara Nalle/Nall

Now, I did wonder if Clara Nall was in fact a Neill. Her parents were Capt. Martin Nall, Jr. and Isabella LNU. Does anyone know for sure if the Nall line intersects with our Neill/Neal lines?

On the Quaker issue, could you please, again, point me toward some sources. I am aware now that there is an issue regarding Presbyterian versus Quaker Neills, and that there is a belief that they are from unrelated lines, but trying to find more information on this netted me a brick wall. Were they Quakers in Ireland? Also, do you know when they left the Quaker faith? I am only assuming, here, but I imagine they became Presbyterians or joined the Methodist Episcopal church after leaving the faith, making it even harder to sort out! I know that one researcher believes that the Presbyterian bunch originally were McNeills and from Scotland, and that the Quaker bunch were Irish, but I'd like to read more about it. Since they all ended up in NC, it makes it really hard to differentiate!!

I'm afraid I got confused on the John Neill and John Duckworth as double cousins. Could you please explain that more fully? The info I found shows John Duckworth's parents to be John Duckworth and Sarah Hankins. And, if we do belong to the John Neill/Esther Raford, William Neill/Sarah (possibly Callander) line, I didn't find any Duckworth references farther up the line...which doesn't mean much since references are hard to find!

The information that John Neill and family went to McMinn County with the other Neill siblings made so much sense. I had seen and added the McMinn Neills to my database, because I was sure someday I'd find out how they fit in, but your information that allowed me to go backwards from Hamilton County to McMinn after leaving NC was really helpful.

This has been long, but I hope it generates more discussion. Your information was very helpful and I appreciate your having shared it. I have information on my line from Peter A. Neill (anyone know what the initial stands for?) and Susan Runyon forward and am glad to share what I have.

Regards,
Lorraine
