Hi, Neill listees,

When I turned my attention to *documenting* my earlier Neill branch recently, I expected to simply confirm and add to the information I had gotten from some of the online records at Ancestry, FamilySearch, Genealogy, and other sites. Instead, it appears that every *other* Neill branch is well documented, and I can't find records that document the tie between my 4x ggfather John Neill and his father John Neill, nor have I seen marriage records with the name Ann McKenzie, or records showing that Peter's and John's mother was named Ann or Ann McKenzie. Also, does anyone know if Peter and John had any other siblings?

I am really hoping that someone has some documentation that you would be willing to share. Below is what I have:

3x great-grandparents Peter A. Neill (b. 5 Jul 1811, North Carolina; d. 1 Oct 1852, Barry County, Missouri) and his wife, Susan Runyon (b. 11 Nov 1818, Bledsoe County, Tennessee; d. 11 Dec 1897, Barry County, Missouri) lived in District 27, Hamilton County, Tennessee per the 1840 and 1850 US Federal Census reports. They may have lived there earlier, as well, although they were married in Rhea County on 8 Oct 1835. His parents, John Neill and Ann, also are on the 1850 census as living in Hamilton County. My 2x great-grandfather, Isaac Louis Neill, was born in Hamilton County on 6 Oct 1844. I don't find Ann Neill on any census later than 1850, and don't know if she even made it to Missouri with her husband John. The Peter Neill and his family moved to Barry County, Missouri in the fall of 1853. I'm not sure when his father John moved there.

FamilySearch lists John Neill as Peter A. Neill's father with no mother's identity. I found the name "Ann McKenzie" from a Neill family tree on Ancestry, but have discovered nothing that confirms the last name of "McKenzie" at all. I tried "Macklin" since Peter's brother was named "John Macklin Neill." Nothing fit, also not under various "MacLinn," "McLean," and other spellings. In fact, the only document that I could find naming John Neill's wife was the 1850 census that listed John Neill and wife Ann. According to Ancestry's Family Data Collection, Individual Records, John Neill married "Mrs. Neill" in 1809 in Tennessee, but I wasn't able to find more information in other records.

John Neill's birth and death dates, 21 Jul 1778 and 6 Oct 1859, come from the Rootsweb Osa Cemetery listing. His place of birth, Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina, comes from an Ancestry Neill family tree. The 1850 census confirms North Carolina as place of birth. In 1850, he and wife Ann lived in District 27, Hamilton County, Tennessee. The one bit of data that makes me believe that he is the correct John Neill is that Peter A. Neill and Simeon Runyon, Susan's brother, lived in District 27, Hamilton County, also.

There are a multitude of Neills in Burke County, North Carolina. Various undocumented family trees have cited my 4x great-grandfather John Neill as the son of John Neill (b. 1740, Chester, Pennsylvania; d. abt. 1791, Morganton, Burke County, NC) and Sarah Duckworth. I would love to be able to confirm this line. I could not find any John in the records who fit the dates to be the son of the various documented lines of the Neill family in North Carolina.

If anyone has further information on Peter A. Neill and his life in Hamilton County, Tennessee, ancestry of John Neill and the identity of his wife and parents, I'd surely be grateful!

Regards,
Lorraine
