George S. Goodwin, late 19th and early 20th cent.

Seeking information on the family of George S. Goodwin, second son and third child of James Horace Goodwin and Ruth Negley.

George S. Goodwin, b. 1843, prob. In Tarentum (or Deer Twp), Allegheny Co. PA; m. S. J. ?? (according to the 1880 census for Ottumia Twp., Wapello Co., IA.). George accompanied his family westward and is listed in Clark Co., Missouri in 1860. Sometime after 1860 he apparently moved to Iowa, but I can find no reference for him in the 1870 census. The 1880 census for Ottumia Twp., Wapello Co., IA lists him as S. G. Goodwin, age 38; a salesman; with his wife as S. J. Goodwin. Also in the household is Ruth Goodwin (probably Ruth Negley) listed as his mother and E. R. Goodwin, age 25 as his son (surely his brother Robert E. Goodwin since it is highly unlikely that a 38 year old man would have a 25 year old son). NOTE: Why did some census takers insist on listing people by their initials rather than by name—have they no respect for people interested in genealogy?)

Felix Casper Negley, in his 1898 pamphlet on the Negley family, puts George in California, but I cannot find a census reference to support this in 1900.

There is a George S. Goodwin in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Chicago, Cook Co., IL who works with leather and is married to a Mary ??. But this George Goodwin reports his father born in PA rather than CT (where James Horace Goodwin had been born)—not that that is conclusive about anything. And finally there is a George S. Goodwin, widower, living with Marmaduke B. Hamel (a bank clerk) and his wife. The father of this George Goodwin is reported to have been born in CT.

QUESTIONS: Is this actually George Goodwin, son of James Horace and Ruth Negley Goodwin listed in the 1880 census/

IF so, did George and S. J. ?? have any children?

Where was George at the time of the 1870 census?

What happened to him after 1880? Did he go to California OR did he end up in Chicago OR something else.

Willing to share information.

Bill Muller
