Confusion about Thomas Neel and Sarah Jane Spratt

Looking at online pedigrees and family listings, I see that there were possibly two different Thomas Neels that are married (at least in someone's minds or records) to Sarah Jane Spratt. One Thomas Neel was said to be born in Scotland around 1718. The other may have been born in 1702 somewhere in North Carolina. (Some claim Cape Fear, but that is not clear to me.) The problem becomes that the children are difficult to separate. Those listed on the genealogy I have seen include John Neel (1728-1771), Thomas Neel (1732-1780), Elizabeth Neel (1732-1797), James Samuel Neel (1734-1791), David Neel (1735-), Sarah Neel (1738-), Andrew Neel (1740-1776), David Neel (1744-1811), and Joseph Neel (1746-1772). There may be others. I would like some help disecting the two families. Anyone out there able to do it?
