John Louis Neeb
John Louis Neeb, son of Casper and Catherine Neeb, was born in Naumheim, near Giessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, March 10, 1819. He immigrated with his father to the U.S. After landing in Maryland, they moved to Chambersburg,PA then to Richfield, Summit Co.,OH. John Louis Neeb became an apprentice in the office of the "Freiheits Freund," a German paper in Chambersburg at sixteen years of age. In 1837, the paper was moved to Pittsburg,PA. The owner, Victor Scriba bought with him John Louis Neeb and his cousin William Neeb as assistants in the printing office.
John Louis Neeb advanced through positions and eventually, along with his cousin William Neeb, became co-owners of the "Freiheits Freund."
