Doug:
over the years it has been my duty to push the Switz births.
Shirley Swenson (family book author)felt the bavarian line was important.
Johannes was born in Haefelfingen in 1707, and married Elsbeth Thompson in 1735 and later divorced. She was born in Bavaria. They had two boys, Hans Georg- Oct1737 and Johann Jacob -May 1740: Both born in haefelfingen.
Johannes took his family and fled from Switzerland as a Palatine refugee. They boarded a boat for America in Holland
which put in for refuling and for picking up additional people, cargo, and provisions in England. It was there that Elsbeth took the two boys and got off the boat, to raise her boys in England.
Johannes came on and landed in Philadelphia. Then he took off and went down into Delaware into the Swedish settlement
at Newcastle. There in 1755, he took Anna Maria Stilley
as his wife. Old Swede church records show the marriage, and the births of six boys and three girls to them.
One of his sons, John was the father of George, whom was the father of the 7 Mormon Pioneers. (George and Susannah had 13 children in all.)Pioneer Nebekers were,Elizabeth, George, Henry, John, Lewis, Peter and (to Oregon, Samuel)Most western US Nebeker families trace back to these 6 men.
In the Nebeker book in the Salt Lake Library, author, Shirley Swenson has added a handwritten note that the Nebeker's were from Switzerland, and not from Bavaria.
Lee Nebeker (now departed) and his wife traveled to Basilland's Canton in Switzerland. They went to Haefelfingen and to near by Reumlingen and looked at the available records and confirmed the birth and marriage of Johannes. I saw copies if those records in his home in Idaho, by taking a trip, there in 1967 to see for myself.
In about 1965, Ralph Nebiker from Switzerland was in the Southern California area on a buisness trip.He was at a
Military Supplier in San Fernando Valley, and as I was close, (Pasadena area.) we visited with each other.I had
seen his name in the paper and left a message for him at the Supplier. He returned my call and we were able to meet...it was a brief but enjoyable visit.Ralph knew of Johannes, and said the family always wondered where he fled
when Johannes and Elsbeth left their home in Haefelfingen.
Also, the children and grandchildren of Johannes and Anna Maria,- whom joined the DAR- all entered the same generations required...and they all showed the father and mother of Johannes as Hans Georg and Margaret Meyer Nebiker of Haefelfingen.
Now this really is nothing to worry aboutfor the records show both wives and all family connections are in place.(see IIGI)- nevelle-
