Hi Helen
I would be interested in your family history if it goes back to 1840 or earlier.
I have traced my England based ancestors back to around 1840, ( i.e. first record is 1841 census )and in this and all futureCensus entries for James ( Great great great grandfather ) and Patrick his son who came over to Bradford, Yorkshire, the only reference is to County Mayo or simply Ireland. Never is a place name or town recorded, so I have become a little stuck in my research.
I have established that Ballina and Bunnyconnellan and surrounding parishes in Mayo are areas to which the surname Neary is common, but I have no other firm lead.
I know that this period was that of the recurring famines, and that record keeping would be the last thing on peoples minds at this time. I also know that many public records were destroyed during the troubles in Dublin in 1922.
I do not have Excel on my PC, my spreadsheet is Corel Quattro Pro so I don't know if it would read an Excel doc.
I would be grateful for any help in any event.
Regards
Kevin Narey
PS An interesting snippet - Mayo means Plain of the Yew ( Gaelic - Maigh Eo )
