I'm Dan Kneeland from Grafton, Ma. My Greatgrandfather was James J. Nealon (1868-1943 Worcester, Ma.). He and his 1st cousin Austin Nealon came from County Sligo to Worcester Ma. around the 1880's and "Angicized" their names from "Nealon" to "Kneeland" so that they could avoid prejudice and get jobs.
We were surprised when the records came back and all the birthdates matched that this had occured. Our Coat of Arms are "Twin Silver Unicorns" instead of A "Hare with checkerboard azure around it".
We do not as of yet know who My Great Grandfather's Mother's Maiden name is nor his 1st cousin Austin's.
Worcester County Massachusetts is loaded with Irish Catholic "Kneeland"s from County Sligo because Austie had 10 kids etc. My GreatGrandfather had only 3.
Coincidentally, my brother James F. Kneeland III was also born in 1954 (Grafton High Class of 1972)!
Please inform if helpful.
Dan (Hannon) Kneeland
