I don't really have an answer, but my Neal ancestors have dark brown Indian skin and we have always been told we have Indian blood. I have an Eliza Neal in my line, but she wasn't born until 1840's and a James Neal as well but born later. There father was Thomas Jefferson Neal and they lived in Orange County, NC there was a Lydia Neal in Orange County, NC as well, but she was married to a Henry Neal. He died in 1826 and I have not been able to find out were Lydia Neal went. She had 8 children and only two girls were out of the home because they were married. The one daughter was Susan Neal and she married a Mabry. They moved to Tuscalosa. Alabama.
I know they aren't the same people, but the names are similar, so maybe there is a relation. Try looking in Orange county, NC or the Neals in NC also had relatives who lived in Haywood County, TN. There were two or three James Neals in Orange County at one time.
