Hi Dorothy,
I spoke with dad yesterday about you and yes we are second cousins. It is strange that we came in contact in this fashion.
As far as the middle initial "L" it is my understanding that my great grandfather John Butcher did not have the middle initial. The middle initial came into the family after the Spanish-American war. The name "Lawton" came from Brigadier General Henry Lawton. The middle initial started with grandpa Butcher.I believe you referred to him as uncle Lawton in your posting.
Also, in one of the postings I believe a lady by the name of Nancy posted a link to a deed.I spoke with dad yesterday and here's a quote from the e-mail.
Did we have in our genealogy a John Butcher that bought 640 acres in Valentine Nebraska in May 1862?Below is a link to the document.

"Yes, that was Grandpa Butcher. The May 20, 1862 was the date of the Homestead Act.Grandpa "proved up" on the property June 22, 1911.Dad was born in a sod house on that property.I have been there."
Dad was also wondering if you received the copies of discharge papers for John Butcher your grandfather?
John III
