FANNIN - FANNON - FANNING
Re: FANNIN / FANNON / FANNING in your state after 1887.
Earlier this year I posted messages to the GenForum for each state in the US in an effort to find where this family lived their last years. So many have searched the Internet and Ancestry.com in efforts to help me break this brick wall.I appreciate their efforts, but I have done that myself over and over to no avail. Perhaps in my attempt to provide complete information, I did not make the mission clear.I have been working on this for more than thirty years, so it would take several pages to list all the places I have already checked.
It appears the only thing left to do is find a rare mention of the names in some source for the period after 1887; court records; city directories; obituaries; cemetery inscription books, personal notes, etc. That is the primary reason I’m posting these messages to each state.
This Fannin family seems to have disappeared form WV after 1887, and I have not been able to find where they ended up.Silas (1822 KY); Mary (“Polly”) (1826 VA); Theodore (1845 VA); Easton (1848 KY); Rebecca (1850 VA); John(1857 VA); Jeremiah (1855 VA); Thomas Jefferson (1860 VA); George Washington (1862 VA); Mary Belle (1864 VA); Calista (1866 VA); and William (1868 VA). What I HAVE found very briefly is as follows:
Theodore died as POW at Camp Chase, Ohio 1865. Easton and family stayed in WV and he died in Huntington, WV in the 1920’s. Rebecca married 2nd Unknown after 1877 and moved from WV. John had a large family and died at Odds, Kentucky in the 1920’s; Thomas died in Ashland, Kentucky 1940. William apparently died in 1899 or 1900 in Kentucky. No information on the others.
The data being propagated by LDS Family Search related to Silas Fannin appears to be very much unsubstantiated and possibly false and made-up.That being:
Silas Fannin died in Wyoming County, WV 1890.
Mary Fannin died in Wyoming County, WV 1904.
Silas married Mary in Cabell County, WV 1845.
Rebecca d/o Silas and Mary died in McDowell County, WV 1940.
I have researched the dates shown above and found no original documentation for proof.Unfortunately all places and dates have been well calculated so that they are logical, but no proof.
I have contacted the person who submitted them to LDS and she couldn’t provide any original source or documentation.
I have contacted the LDS Family History Library and challenged them. They say they only use what their members submit, and they neither verify nor make corrections.I have gone back to the submitter and challenged her information. She said she would make corrections, but if there has been any effort to do so, it is taking time to clean up what is on the Internet -- maybe LDS won’t do it.Anyway it appears to have multiplied on their site since I first found it over a year ago.I fear that other Mormons are using it as fact without checking.
I have had searches done in court records in Cabell, Wyoming, and McDowell Counties, West Virginia, and they have no substantiating records on these names and dates. I have had lookup volunteers in these areas check their sources to verify or deny these data and in all cases, nothing was found. I have posted many messages on the Internet, and from all the response to date there has been no verification of this data.
If you find or have records of your state (1880 - 1920) pertaining to Fannin/ Fannon/ Fanning to share, please post here, or send to me direct at [email protected].
Thank you.
