My grandfather John B. Merrill helped build the old ( now torn down) train station in Alliance. They moved to Alliance(or nearby) after 1886 from Genoa, Nance Co.
The family was nearby when the Ghost Dance events were unfolding in 1890. John and Caroline's ranch was fortified by the local whites using the sod fence as a bastion.
Events to the north never required this over reaction, but they responded to the Army's ( 7th CAlvary) plea to seek a protected area, and their farm was a focal point for the community. The Merrills left for CA sometime before 1893.
