See if you can get hold of a book titled "Origins of North Dakota Place Names" by Mary Ann Barnes Williams. From the snippet on Google Books, it looks like she gives two possibilities - (1)named for Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, an aviator killed in a flight with Orville Wright, and (2) which isn't included in the snippet.

One possibility I saw was a railroad official for the SOO R.R. I don't know what SOO stands for.

In "Collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota" a Maj. J.O. Selfridge was mentioned in a diary written in July, 1863.
