Gifford watchman on bridge in Bismarck
I am looking for the parents of Edmond J. Gifford, b. 1830 Utica, Oeida, NY. In ca 1885 Edmond and wife, Josephine, moved to Bismarck, North Dakota, where he invested in dry-land wheat farming and lost everything. In ca 1890 he became the watchman on the Northern Pacific Railway Bridge over the Missouri River in Bismarck, ND.
According to the Bismarck Daily Tribune (Aug 23, 1900) Edmund was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and went to visit friends in Petoskey, MI.
Josephine Gifford died in Petoskey, Michigan, 2 May 1895. Edmond J. died in Bismarck, ND, 30 November 1903 while still a watchman at the bridge over the Missouri River. His body was returned to Michigan for burial.
I know a great deal more about Edmund, but nothing of his parents.
