Martha Nora LaJoie was born on July 8, 1916 in White Earth, North Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Blikre) Imsland. She was raised and educated in White Earth until 1927 when her family moved northwest of Ray, North Dakota. Martha then attended Stewart School and later Ray High School.

In 1934 Martha was united in marriage to Ben Elliott in Wolf Point, Montana. To this union her five children were born.

In the mid 1940?s the family moved to New Mexico. Ben died in 1953, and in 1954 Martha and her children moved to Nebraska. It was while visiting North Dakota in the summer of 1958 that Martha met Harley LaJoie. The couple was married at Raymond, Nebraska on October 15, 1958. In 1960 the couple established their home in Ray where they remained through the years.

Martha loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed shopping for clothes and shoes, and liked to garden and do canning. She enjoyed family gatherings and was a great cook. Martha was a very loving mother and grandmother.
