Pioneer Passes Away Porter E. Bissell of Sykeston, one of the pioneers of this section, died on Friday, Jan. 10th at 8 pm at the home of his sister, Mrs. Geo. Hall, at Carrington, of consumption from which he has been a sufferer for a number of years. Death came as a angel of mercy, as he has suffered intensely for several months. The funeral was held Sunday at 2:30 pm from the home of Geo. Hall, and the remains laid to rest in the Carrington cemetery. Rev. Robt. Paton officiated. The deceased was born at Pontiac, Mich. on April 26th, 1855. His mother died when he was very young, and afterwards made his home with the Varnums, father and mother of the late Zeph Varnum. The deceased's father served as a solider all through the Civil War and hence did not have much opportunity to look after his children. The deceased came to Sykes Dakota in 1886 and shortly afterwards opened a machine shop, which he ran continuously until he had to give up work on account of his health. He was an expert in his line of work, and he hence drew a large trade. No job was too difficult for him to do. If he did not have the tools,he made them. Mr. Bissell went west to two years for his health and also last winter, but the change did not prove beneficial, and he came back to North Dakota to await the end. The only relatives left are two sisters, Mrs. Geo. Hall of Carrington and Mrs. Lincoln Thomas of Los Angeles Cal. The deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew him. We have never heard anyone speak ill. (This is not the previous PORTER BISSELL that has been mentioned before now in another posting. His father was ANDREW BISSELL and ANDREW'S SISTER was HARRIETT BISSELL BARRETT LANDIS. She was on my maternal side....gg grandmother. HARRIETT AND ANDREW'S FATHER WAS DANIEL VOLATAIRE BISSELL) Need more info? email me at carachapina@yahoo.com Notify Administrator about this message?
