This is amazing! I think you just solved an important riddle for me. The death certificate for Tom Banks lists his father as "unknown." My aunt and I have been wondering how this might be if his last name is Banks. Obviously the father couldn't be "unknown" after all. But we never considered the adoption angle, and the name Wesley Banks comes up a lot in our searches. It is the middle name of Tom's son, my grandfather James, too. This is so very intriguing.

I do wonder how Thomas received the last name Hensley if his mother's maiden name is Boon? Did she marry a Hensley? Was this Tom's father, or his stepdad for a brief period before being adopted by Wesley Banks?

Thank you so much, Liz! It seems the pieces are starting to fall together. The information on Tempy's mother and siblings is especially useful. We are trying to piece together the family tree going as far back in Yancey County as we can.

Going forward down the family line, what we know so far is:

That Thomas married Bell Burlinson sometime in the late 1890s.
That they lived in Burnsville and had two children -- James Wesley Banks (my grandfather) in 1900, and Connor Banks in 1902.
That Bell passed away and Thomas remarried Angie Hicks of Burnsville in or around 1906.
That they had two additional living children -- Herbert George Banks and Clyde Lee Banks.
That my grandfather James left North Carolina and came to New York City, where he married my grandmother Frances.

My grandfather passed away in 1962 when my mother and aunt were still toddlers. We're in the process of trying to put all of this together for the family tree. Every little bit helps, and I thank you again immensely.
