Hi, I just found a d/c for William Lee Mathis born abt 1873 in Yancey County, died 8 Jan. 1931 in Yancey County. Wife is Harriet Mathis. Certificate says father is unknown, mother is Emilyn King. On the 1880 census, Caney Rivery, Yancey is a William L. Mathus born abt 1874, son of Margaret E. Mathus, age 39, widow. There are 7 children in this family, no father listed. Also living in the household is William J. Roberson, 62, divorced, boarder. on the 1870 census,Egypt, Yancey is the same family with the mother listed as Emaline Matthews, age 30. She has 3 children and they match the 3 older children on the 1880 census. I have a printed copy of the 1880 census that has marriages in it. Says John Mathis married Margaret King on Nov. 7, 1861. So, I would guess that John Mathis was dead or gone by the 1870 census and at least 4 of Margaret Emeline's children were not by him. This would explain why William's father is listed as unknown.
