I believe you have a few dates wrong. Or the census transcribers do.
This is what I find:
1850 Census, Yancey Co Nc page 401 Roll M432_649
William Fox 46 Laborer
William A 17
James T 15
Moses 7 (your Moses James born 1843)
Mourning 35 F wife
Myrna E 8
Martha J. 5
1870 Jacks Creek Yancey Co NC Roll M593_116 page 802
Post Office--Day Book
FOST, Moses 27 Farmer
Elvira 26 wife
William M. 4 son
James J 2 son
1880 Jacks Creek Yancey Co NC Roll T9_988 page 568D
Enumeration District 236
32/37 Fox, Moses 36 Farmer
Elvira C 36
William M. 13 son
James J. 11 son
Lidda 7 daughter
Isaac F 4 son
John S 1 son
1900 Yancey Co Page 148 dwelling 22
Fox, Moses 56
Allie 56 (could be a pet name for Elvira)
By 1910 Moses Fox now 67 is living in Brush Creek, Yancey Co with wife, Nancy age 29. They have been married one
year and have a son 1 month old by the name of Marion R.
Apparently Elvira has died within the last 10 years.
In the 1870 census you will see the spelling difference in the surname. Match information on the 1880 census and this is the same family.
I feel your William McKelly Fox was born about 1866.
I hope this helps clear things up for you.
