I have some old letters from my grandmother to her mother and in a couple she refers to the flu. In light of the swine flu outbreak I thought I would share these letters.

Letter: Jennings, NC Nov. 11, 1918
Dear mama, I will write you a few lines this evening. Jim has gone to Elkin with his tobacco. He said if it didn’t bring what he wanted it to sh was going to bring it back and take it to Winston. George Somers was buried Saturday he had influenza and pneumona he left his wife and one baby. Cordia Nicholson Nicks died some time ago with the flu she had a baby 3 days old it died too she left two little kids I saw on the paper where Della was dead there has been several cases around here. Roof weatherman is bad off with it. I recon you all haven’t had it yet. How is Grandma? We heard that Roy Salmons was killed in France. Risdon parks got his leg broken the ambulance run over him. I got a letter from Nellie and Flora they were all well. When did you hear from Leslie? Well I don’t know any thing to write. We haven’t got all of our wheat sowed and corn pulled yet and I have a little more cotton to pick ans soon Velma Seymore

Letter: Jennings NC Feb 1919
Dear Mama I will write you a few lines this evening. Me and Jim has both been sick he got sick a week before I did the dockor come to see us both but he said he didn’t think it was the flu. But I believe Jim had it he was just like they say they are with it. I have had the Rheumatism for the last 2 or 3 months so I can’t hardly do any thing both of the kids have a bad cold. Mr Dick Madison’s Lee Weatherman’s Tuner Gridgory’s and Will Johnson’s folks has had the flu It hurt some of right bad. Emma Denny Fries died with pneumonia. There was three buryings last Sunday week two at Zion and one at Hunting Creek Mrs Linzey old age. Wrisdon Parks got wounded in France he had got back to New York and had an operation and died there Mr. and Mrs. Parks went to see him but he was dead when they got there. Zelda Howard’s man died with the flu they sent him to Zion too. We sold this place for $1,800 but the man backed out. We got water in our well but it begun to cave so bad they had to quit until he gets some tiling. Well I will finish my letter this morning. I started it sun I received your letter yesterday was sorry to hear of Grandpa’s death. I had a letter from Nellie a few weeks ago she sent me their picture she said Flora had to get her some glasses. I have eleven little chickens and two hens setting. I have another one I want to set as soon as I get enough good eggs. Jim traded an old cow and Lills calf off the other day and got a nice big mule We have a horse too. Wish I was close enough to let you have milk. I give the pigs milk. We have a good little cow now Will Windsor come back Xmas he come by here to see me he looks bad he looks like aunt Bessie did I recon he is staying at Winston. Well I don’t know anything else to write ans soon. Velma Seymore P. S. Will Myers was killed in France in October.
