I found a social security death record for a Curtis Sparks born in 1880 but who passed away in Nebraska.
What were the details of his birth and passing?
I also see that he is listed on the 1930 US Census in Wythe County, Virginia, listed as born in 1871.
But you probably already have that information.
Birth certificates themselves only came into existence in the early part of the nineteenth century in most states. Sometimes death records were kept earlier than that, and some private or religious organizations may have kept birth records in their records. But censuses are about all we have to rely upon, or other documents which required someone to state his age. The marriage licenses that you found are probably the earliest and most reliable documents you will find.
He may have changed his birth name. If only you knew his father's name, then you could go from there.
