Julia Cornelia ("Nelie") Watson Greene married 2nd, as his 2nd wife, Rev. John Thomas McGuire, a widower with four children. Nelie and John had one son together, Donald Lee McGuire, b. 30 Mar. 1927 at Linville, Avery County, NC.
John and Nelie were distant cousins through their common
descent from "Yankee John" Church, but I don't believe
they were ever aware of the relationship.
Nelie died 22 May 1939 in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, NC, of breast cancer. It is my understanding that she was buried next to Samuel L. Greene.
John Thomas McGuire married 3rd, in 1940, Elsie Ray
Barrier Lucas, former wife of Joseph Lucas. Elsie
had two sons by her first marriage, Ed and Chester.
Elsie died 22 June 1968 at Banner Elk, Avery County, NC,
and John died 19 December 1968 at Banner Elk. They are
buried at Jonas Ridge, NC.
John Thomas McGuire was my great-grandfather; I did not
know Nelie or her children by her first marriage, but
have been told that her daughter attended the state
school for the blind, married a man she met there
(Mr. Moffett) and lived in Ohio. Newland ("Red")
remained in Western NC, married and had children, and
died in 1992. I don't know any other details.
Nelie is fondly remembered by her surviving stepchildren,
Hugh McGuire of Marion and Ruby Biddix of Spruce Pine,
as a good and pious woman and an affectionate mother.
Her surviving son, Don, lived in Kansas for many years
but has resided at Spruce Pine for about the last 15 years.
Don has two children and five grandchildren. Since 1999
he has been married to Joan Louise, born Hartnett,
formerly the widow of Vann Buren Ross.
