John Hopkins' parents were Peter Hopkins and Wilmoth Fowler of Nash Co.

John's siblings named in his father's will were Crawford, Joseph, Peter, Alsey, Wiley, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Susannah and David.

John's first wife was Mary Strickland, and it is possible that the Elizabeth who was his second wife was Elizabeth Fowler (there is a marriage bond for them in 1800).

John also had an unknown older son who apparently died before his father (see the 1800 Wake Co. census).
