Chet, you do not mention a year for the marriage date. If it was prior to 1912-13, the original should be in the Dept. of Vital Statistics at the County Courthouse. Write to them if your time is okay and they can make you a copy of their original document. There is always the possibility that the original is not in very good condition either. The clerks in the office are more used to looking at these records and may be able to help decipher it. When I researched records in Watauga Co., I found that there was an index at the beginning of each book which gave the husband's and wife's name and the page number on which it is located.
