Flewellen/Fluellin/Ellen of Wake Co., NC
Posted by: Victoria Evans (ID *****1791) Date: August 19, 2002 at 17:18:06

I am looking for information on the parents of Caroline Flewellen. She was born on 12 November 1827 in Wake County, North Carolina. She married Josiah Evans, the marriage bond date being 17 September 1846. Ancestry.com's North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 database lists the marriage bond information as follows:

Bride: Caroline Flue Ellen
Groom: Josiar Evens
Bond Date: 17 Sep 1846
County: Wake
Record #: 01 143
Bondsman: Joel Clifton
Witness: James T Marriot
Bond #: 000153005

They moved to Tuscaloosa Alabama sometime between 1852 and 1855. She is buried in the Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Her headstone states her date of death was 18 August 1896.

I have been looking at the census records for Wake County, NC for 1830 and 1840 for any possible parents. I found the following with regard to "free white persons" listed:

1830

Ellen, Micajah
3 males under 5
3 males of 5 and under 10
1 male of 10 and under 15
1 male of 40 and under 50
1 female of 10 and under 15
1 female of 30 and under 40

Ellen, William
2 males under 5
1 male of 5 and under 10
1 male of 40 and under 50
2 females under 5
1 female of 5 and under 10
1 female of 10 and under 15
1 female of 15 and under 20
1 female of 40 and under 50

Fluellin, Allen
1 male of 30 and under 40
1 female under 5
1 female of 20 and under 30

Lewelling, John
1 male under 5
1 male of 10 and under 15
5 males of 15 and under 20
1 male of 40 and under 50

Lewelling, Moses
1 male under 5
1 male of 5 and under 10
1 male of 30 and under 40
1 female under 5
1 female of 5 and under 10
1 female of 20 and under 30

Lewelling, Wm.
1 male of 20 and under 30
1 female of 50 and under 60

It appears that the likely candidates as Caroline's father are William Ellen, Allen Fluellin, John Lewelling and Moses Lewelling.
By 1840 the Lewellings have disappeared and Allen Fluellin has died.

1840

Ellen, Howel
1 male of 15 and under 20
1 male of 40 and under 50
1 female of 15 and under 20

Ellen, Micajah
1 male of 10 and under 15
1 male of 15 and under 20
3 males of 20 and under 30
1 male of 50 and under 60
1 female of 20 and under 30
1 female of 50 and under 60

Ellen, Micajah (yes, another one)
1 male under 5
1 male of 20 and under 30
1 female of 20 and under 30

Ellen, Redley (widow of Allen)
1 male of 5 and under 10
1 female of 20 and under 30

Ellen, William
1 male of 10 and under 15
1 male of 20 and under 30
1 male of 60 and under 70
1 female of 5 and under 10
2 females of 10 and under 15
2 females of 20 and under 30
1 female of 40 and under 50

In 1840, Caroline would have been about 13 years old (the "of 10 and under 15" range). Of those listed in both the 1830 census and 1840 census, only William Ellen has a female of the correct age range. However, I can't help thinking that she could have been the daughter of Allen and Ridley, and that perhaps after the death of Allen, Caroline had to go to work for or live with another family, and perhaps that is why the female under 5 in the 1830 census has disappeared.

Does anyone have any information on Caroline Flewellen/Fluellin/Flue Ellen, which might connect her to parents?
