The Raleigh School of Commerce was founded around 1931 by John Winfred Heath of Iredell County and previous teacher and principal at Fairfield High School in Hyde Co., NC. The school was located 1st at 209 1/2 McDowell St and 2nd at 116 1/2 Salisbury St, Raleigh, Wake Co., NC. J.W. was an instructor and his daughter Carey was also an instructor. His daughter Mary managed the dormitory. I don't know where the first dormitory was located but in 1938 they purchased 406 N. Blount St and established their residence and the dormitory there. October 12, 1937, while sitting in his office at the school, J.W. died of a heart attack. Carey inherited the school. In 1941 they opened a second dormitory on N. Bloodworth Street. This one was managed by brother Carl's wife, Bleeker Mullins Heath. The house on Bloodworth was sold in 1943. In the 1950s Carey sold her interest in the school to her assistant and she and Mary retired to St. Petersburg, Pinellas Co., FL, where they lived out their lives. For more info on this family see the Heath-Lewis Family Tree at Ancestry.com.
Cynthia (J.W. was my great grandfather, my mother attended Raleigh School of Commerce where she met my father).
