Black genealogy is really, really hard to do, because slaves were not listed by name during slavery days. They were not able to legally marry, either. And after the War, some took the last name of their masters, some didn't, and some changed their last names over time for whatever reason. You need to look at all the white people named Lewis in that township in 1870, see if they are listed on the 1860 slave schedule of owning slaves, and see if your Alex could fit in age-wise (keeping in mind that many didn't know how old they were.) Sometimes the slave owners had deeds, inventories, mortgages, etc. that listed their slaves and that can help you trace them, but as I said, it's really hard, and some people never can go back before 1870.
