I am searching for additional information related to Abigail (Smith) Rice who was named in the Johnston Co., NC will of Brittian Smith as follows:
"Johnston County North Carolina Will Abstracts 1746-1825 Vol. I" Copyright 1975 by Elizabeth E. Ross & Published by Elizabeth E. Ross Page 9, #69 Brittian Smith 23 Feb. 1793 Prob. Nov. Ct. 1793: Sister Edith Allen - All part & right in land coming to me from my father's estate of inheritance, lying in Johnston County, to her and her heirs. Brothers Gideon Smith & William Smith - All estate, real & personal, on Western Waters on The Western side of Blue Ridge Mts., lands; Negroes; livestock; household furnishings; to be divided equal between them. Sister Abagail Rice - 1 Negro boy Daniel. Friend Matthew Jones, Sr. - Coat; bridle & saddle, feather bed & furniture. Exec: William Smith, Gideon Smith, brothers. Wit: Alexander Avery, Jn. Smith, William Sasser.
Brittian Smith was the son of John Smith, Jr. Besides Brittian Smith, other children of John Smith, Jr. included Abigail (married Unknown Rice), Edith (married John Allen), John, Gideon, William, James, and Pheraby. John Smith, Jr. supposedly died somewhere in East TN before 1793 (most sources I've seen state that he died in Hawkins Co., TN). The following record links Brittian Smith and his father John Smith, Jr.:
“Johnston County, North Carolina Abstracts: Deed Books E-1, Transcripts 2 & 3 (F-1, N-1, P-1, Q-1, R-1) 1764-1791 Vol. II” by Weynette Parks Haun: #902 Tr-3:330: Johnston County. 2 May 1785. John Smith, Green Co., N.C., to John Allen, Jo Co, out of love and affection I bear to my son in law John Allen afsd 1 Negro woman named Phebee about 18 years of age & a Negro boy named Harry about 2 years of age with their increase…Wit: J. Rice, Britain Smith. May ct 1790. R. Sanders, Clk.
John Smith, Jr. was the son of John Smith, Sr. who was supposedly born in Isle of Wight Co., VA in the late 1600's, lived in Johnston Co., NC for many years and died in Jefferson Co., TN in 1793. According to lawsuit filed by his son, Samuel against the other heirs, he died Feb 1793. His estate was administered in Jefferson Co TN, but the lawsuit was in the Superior Court of the Hamilton District in Knoxville, TN. The suit named seven children as follows: Jane (married Thomas Phelps), Pheruba (married John Hinton) and Samuel; the last four named children predeceased John Smith, Sr. -- Ann (married Needham Bryan), Elizabeth (married William Bryan), John Jr and Alexander. The suit was abated as Samuel died c Oct 1795 and it was not pursued by his heirs or successors.
Does anyone have information regarding this family. Does anyone have estate records relating to John Smith, Jr. which mention his daughter Abigail Rice? Is it possible that Abigail Smith was married to Joshua Rice (born c.1775), son of John Rice and Abigail Sugg of Wake County, NC (John Rice was the first Clerk of the Wake County, NC Court in 1771 as well as Deputy Clerk to the Crown).
