The 31st annual Hiram King Jones and Caroline Justus Jones Reunion will begin at noon Saturday in the fellowship hall of the Bethel Wesleyan Church on Tracy Grove Road in Henderson County.
All descendants are invited to gather for lunch, photographs and a business meeting, followed by a program on the historical Jones Cemeteries in Henderson County.
Hiram King Jones was born May 6, 1820, in Old Buncombe County (today’s Henderson County). He died in May 1910 and is buried at the Jones Cemetery in the Upward community. He was the son of Capt. Robert Jones, a descendant of the first Jones to settle in Henderson County, John Jones Sr., and Elizabeth McGuffie, a descendant of Abraham Kuykendall. Hiram King Jones was named for his uncle, Hiram King, another early settler of the county. Jones was a farmer, a trader and land speculator. He owned a large amount of land along the Green River and Big Hungry River to the Upward community. Much of the land he once owned is now part of the N.C. Gamelands. He also owned land along the French Broad River that was sold to the Shipman family and in the Pink Beds area of today’s Pisgah National Forest. The family’s sawmill and lumber business furnished much of the lumber for the early 1800s homes in Flat Rock.
He married Mary Caroline Justus, daughter of John Justis Jr. and Elizabeth Thomas, both of whom descend from the first settlers into Henderson County. The family of John Justis Sr. and Jr. later changed the spelling of the name to Justus.
The couple had 13 children, seven daughters and six sons. One daughter died in childhood, Mary Ann. Another daughter, Catherine Matilda, never married. His sons include: George Washington Jones, James King Jones, John Franklin Jones, Robert Edward Jones, Thomas Jefferson Jones and the Rev. William Henry Jones. Other daughters include: Elizabeth Moselda Jones who married Jasper Albert Revis, Nancy Jones who married Jeremiah Taylor, Emily Delilah Jones who married Daniel Lafayette Morrison, Harriet Caroline Jones who married Pinkney Webster Thompson, and Laura Evelyn Jones who married William Whitted Pace.
