Neil We corresponded sometime ago concerning one of the Confederate Chaplins on whom you were seeking information (Rev. Robert Gilderoy Porter). A long story, but I was reviewing your postings on the Genforum and came across this one and had a couple of questions for you. Wanted to know how much information you may have on William H. Nicholson, as to unit, etc. My wife is a GGgrandaughter of William Harrison Nicholson, late of Transylvania County. He died in 1864, reportedly killed by bushwhackers while in the service of the Transylvania County Home Guard. His son, Evan P. Nicholson, my wife's great grandfather, was a Captain in that organization. I have been trying to verify the story of his death for a couple of years now. I strongly believe that this may be the same William H. Nicholson, since, in 1860, there were very few Nicholsons in Transylvania Co. (until 1861, a part of Henderson Co., NC) and they were all related. There were two William Nicholson heads of household in the census of that year. They were father and son. The elder was 63-years-old, the younger, living next door, in his 20's. I believe that, if the same man, the elder William H. Nicholson would have been the Chaplain, but would not know for certain. News that he was a Minister, however, might come as a surprise to Nicholson researchers as I have never seen that mentioned. Anyway, if you have any information that may help verify that these William H. Nicholson's may be one-in-the-same, I can furnish you some additional information. Presume you are collecting information for a book ? Regards, Robert Notify Administrator about this message?
