Nice to hear from you. I have nothing more on my slippery BJ Wiggins. I am sure you know that your Abraham is listed in the History of Swain County as "Abraham Wiggins born about 1846, married Mary Angeline Cline Burns on April 18, 1875 in Swain Co. He was charged in court with the killing of Polk Gibson; had to leave Swain Co. Before the killing, he and Angeline had gotten a divorce and he had married Joan Bentley. She moved to Kentucky." Whatever happened, it occurred about 1882 and involved several young men. Our BJ Wiggins came and went from the Sampson County family home starting about 1882. He came back home in 1884, in 1885, and in 1888. He left for the last time in 1889 and was not heard from again. In my grandfather's diary, he notes: "At this time I must have been about 4 years old (Roland was born 1878). My father had become a heavy drinking man, and he got into some trouble, and he wouldn't be arrested, and he began to hide out, and from then on he was in and out for several years." Several years ago, a lady named Beverly Sanders Clark wrote to my uncle Lathan Wiggins asking about her ancestor, Josiah Wiggins. She thought her Josiah Wiggins was our Josiah Wiggins, brother of our BJ Wiggins. (NOTE: We think her Josiah was not BJ's brother. Her Josiah was the son of Major Hinton Wiggins.) Beverly writes: "Sometime before 1900, he (her Josiah Wiggins) and his family moved to Darlington, SC, after someone supposedly was run out of NC for killing a black man." Beverly said her grandfather said his grandfather (Josiah) told him it was self-defense and they had to leave NC. Wouldn't it be interesting if we could match up what happened to your Abraham ("He was charged in court with the killing of Polk Gibson and had to leave town") and our BJ getting into trouble and leaving about 1882. A new research lead...was Polk Gibson a black man and did the killing occur about 1882? Betty Notify Administrator about this message?
