JACKS and GENTRY

Hello everyone,

Please help!

I am trying to find out any information about the JACKS family in Surry County NC from around 1830 and earlier.

I am a descendant of SOLOMON JACKS and LEVINA MACOMBER and I have very conflicting information on my family prior to 1828 and am asking for any possible details to help me confirm my JACKS family before that time.

Here is what I know:

In about 1828 two brothers IVAN (born in 1809) and SOLOMON (born 15 Jan 1811) JACKS "appear" in Gallia County Ohio. This 19 and 17 year old courted and married the oldest children, daughters Alethia Ann and Levina MACOMBER respectively, of Alexander Macomber/Macumber. By the 1830 Census they are both in homes with their wives in Gallia County OH. Alexander died soon after this and the JACKS' "boys" become the heads of the family.

Who are Ivan and Solomon's parents?

One suggestion is that they are the sons of SOLOMON JACKS (born about 1782 in Surry Co., NC) son of Richard (James/Reuben) JACKS and his wife Mary (either Mary Sparks or Mary Prock [Brinegar]) who married "Patsy" or "Patsey" GENTRY in 1808 in Surry County.

To date I have found NOTHING to support this and some details which actually suggest this is incorrect. However, I would REALLY LIKE SOME INPUT on this family, PLEASE!

Patsy GENTRY may be Martha GENTRY as Patsy was a common nick-name for Martha.

No one seems to be able to positively place Patsy among the vast GENTRY clan in Surry County NC. It has been suggested that she is the daughter of ABEDNEGO GENTRY, but she could be the child of one of his brothers as well.

The biggest clue to Patsy is that she married SOLOMON JACKS a few years before SHADRACH GENTRY married Solomon's sister MARY "POLLY" JACKS. So one can assume that Patsy was probably a sister or cousin of Shadrach GENTRY who married Polly JACKS.

Does anyone have a list of children for SOLOMON JACKS and PATSY GENTRY? All I have found is their marriage record. Are there death dates for them?

Why am I looking in Surry County for the JACKS' "boys" family?

Family history and family letters written in the 1960's in an attempt to put together information about our ancestors give three "known" facts about the Jacks brothers.

1. Their parents died when they were young. As they are still very young in 1828, we assume one or both parents died not too long before 1828.

2. Levi JACKS, son of Ivan JACKS, said his father was from "ole Caroline". This is the earliest information we have about where the JACKS brothers originiated.

Note: It is not far to go north to Ohio from North Carolina and one would pass (possibly) through Tennesee and Kentucky on the way.

3. Solomon's family says he was "from Kentucky and North Carolina" and that the family may have come from Pennsylvania, possibly from the area of Jacks Mountain.

Note: As this is later information from a grandson instead from a son, earlier family members gave it less weight, but it could be just as true.

That is the extent of my information.

Can anyone help me out?

Gratefully yours,

Sharon Lemkuil
