Hi Judith,

Your Rufus W. TURNEY Sr was born in Surry abt 1916, but I don't have a birth record actual date for him. Don't have a wife for him, but he d. 9-8-1987 in Winston-Salem and his burial is unknown.

He had several siblings including Grace Brythene TURNEY, b. 3-4-1914, d. 12-5-1995 and married to Oliver Lester NELSON (1901 - 1960). They are buried at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church which is just north of Pilot Mtn off old US 52. I'll be posting a survey of that cemetery in a week or so.

Not sure if knew or not, but Rufus' surname was actually FOPEANA, an old historic family name from their ancestor Bastanna FOPEANA (FOPIANA) who immigrated to the US before 1860 from Genoa, ITALY. Rufus' parents were Job Worth FOPEANA and Maggie Belle RING, both of whom are also buried at Sulphur Springs. Not sure of the reason for the name change (americanization, hard to spell, etc), but they all became TURNEY.
