If you haven't done so yet, probably need to subscribe to the ALLEN surname message boards and mailing lists too. Given the dates you mention, I'd also look to Rowan County since Surry was part of it before being created in 1770-1771.
I only show 2 John ALLEN names in the marriage database for Surry before 1900 which are long after those you mention, but could be related to them:
