In regards to your post of 07/12/2000. While I am unable at this time to find a war record on your g-grandfather, I may have some info (which you may be aware of). My g-grandmother, Amanda H. Smith Mabry married a well know Baptist Preacher Alex Whitlock in Stanly County. NC sometime after 1880. This Preacher Whitlock was a widower and is buried in the Silver Springs Cemetery beside his first wife.
Amanda Smith Mabry Whitlock is buried at the Simpson Cemetery near Porter her gravemarker reads AMANDA H. MABRY WIFE OF L. A. WHITLOCK. There is a small grave beside her that reads, INFANT SON OF L..A. & M. H. WHITLOCK DIED MAY 04, 1888 AGE 4 DAYS.
Back in the earlier 1960's I saw a portrait of Amanda And Preacher Whitlock, it must have been taken near the turn of the century.
If this is your g-grandfather I would be happy to exchange info with you.
