There are several folks who have questions on the Whitley forum about members of this family. I decided to post once here, and refer people to the Stanly County site. I see that John Speight has documented this family extensively, but I'll go ahead and post what I found at the NC archives.

From the Whitley Vertical File at the North Carolina archives:
Typewritten affidavit by D. P. Whitley, son of Dr. D.P. Whitley of Albemarle, NC, about an address his father gave at Monroe, NC in June of 1920 at Phillip Whitley’s home, and part of which was published in the June 21, 1920 issue of the Monroe Journal.

“The first Whitley that I have any information of in Piedmont, N.C. was George Whitley born about 1735. He lived on Big Bear Creek in Stanly Co. Was married twice. He reared a large family. He and two or three of his boys were Soldiers in the American Revolution.

In 1890, I talked with one of his sons, Uncle Billie Whitley who was then 113 years old, who told me that he remembered seeing his father and brothers come home from the war, bringing their guns with them...One of these boys was named George who was a baptist minister. He was married twice, raised a large family, one of his daughters was bitten by a rabid dog & died with Hydrophobia. He also had a son George who was my Cousin Phillip’s & my grandfather. He was one of the commissioners who established the boundary of Stanly County and located the County seat. This George was born 1787, married Rebecca Cagle who was born 1791. They lived on Big Bear Creek. Had 15 children, 13 of whom lived... Among them was Addison Whitley who was Cousin Phillip’s father.”

from the above we get:
George (I) Whitley born @1735, had (among many children), son Billie and son George (II), a Baptist minister who was married twice. George II also had a son named George, who married Rebecca Cagle.

In the same file, on “D. P. Whitley, M.D.” letterhead, there is a handwritten family line -

“George Whitley was born the 28th day December 1787 married Rebecca Cagle who was born April the 4th 1791.

Their children were

Leonard Whitley born the 20th day of December 1810 died the 2nd day of December 1811.
Polly Whitley was born the 8th of May 1812 & married James Caley [Coley?].
Rebecca Whitley was born the 2nd of October 1813 & married Jerry Hinson.
Green Deberry Whitley was born the 14th of April 1815 & married Gincie Almond.
George Whitley was born Nov. 24 1816.
Benjamin Lindsay Whitley was born the 6th day of July 1818 & married Peggy Eudy. [I’m pretty sure it says “Eudy.”]
Addison Whitley was born the 25 of December 1819 & married Somira [?] Mullin.
Semple [Temple?] Whitley was born July 20 1821 & married Annie Hatley.”

As you can see, there are not 15 children listed here. There’s a posting by Larry Hinson on the Stanly County forum for another possible daughter - Elizabeth, who married Daniel Furr. This family line is also laid out extensively at, where the few dates I’ve checked agree with the above.
