My ggrandfather was Nelson Clayton son of Barnett Clayton. I too have run into a stone wall trying to find out who Barnett's parents and brothers and sisters were. I through census records have come to the conclusion that he was the son of Joseph Clayton who lived in Montgomery County NC in the 1830 census. Stanly County was part of Montgomery until 1840 when Montgomery was divided. Barnett signed the pettition to make the division it is on the internet. I think the name Barnett came from his grandmother's maiden name Mary Barnett but I have no proof. Joseph was the son of Daniel Clayton Jr and Mary Barnett. Daniel's father was
Daniel Clayton. Joseph was listed in 1820 in Person County NC, 1830 in Montgomery County nc and after that I do not know where he went.
