Body of Message:

I do not know anything about John H. Neal of Gaston County who served in the 37th NC Troops in the War for Independence however my great grandfather was John H. Neal. b 8/4/1844 d. 3/28/1908 and he served in the 12th NC Infantry CSA, Company E. [Same name and pretty close locations]. He enlisted in the 12th NC on July 29, 1861 at Shelby, NC. He was likely born near Ellenboro in Rutherford County - but I am not sure about that. The historic Neal area is around Patterson Springs, Cleveland County, NC and several of my great, grandfathers brothers lived there. This is historic Neal area and it is almost on the NC/SC line - in fact the SC Welcome Center on I-85 is likely located on a part of this property. Neals lived in both NC and in and around Blacksburg, SC all the way back to the 1700s. At some point in time there was a "Neal" postoffice located on the highway between Grover, NC (near Shelby) in Cleveland County and Blacksburg, SC. Some of these Neals had a family reunion about 20 or 30 years ago but I have lost touch with them. One member of the family was a reporter for the local paper in Cherryville - a female reporter - but she was a good bit older than I am so may have died. My great grandfather John H. Neal is buried at High Schoals Baptist Church near Henrietta, NC along with his wife - Margaret Neal b.3/26/1846 d.8/21/1918. Also most of their children - I think - including my grandfather James Hamilton Neal 4/30/1878 d. 12/19/1955 and his wife Abie Wilson Neal b. 3/18/1880 d.4/25/1966 I do have the CSA records of my great grandfather. I would love to find someone who has done a lot of genealogical work on the Neals in Cleveland County NC , Rutherford County NC, and around Blacksburg SC. It is a problem because of the near location of the state line requires checking in both states. This area is located very near Gaston County and Kings Mountain Battleground so I would imagine that there is interconnections with any Neals from that area. I have always assumed that any Neals from Cleveland County NC were at least cousins.
