Jesse Morrison m. Mary Elliott 1839

I descend from Jesse Morrison, b. 1807 NC (not sure where), who married Mary Elliott, b. 1814 NC (not sure where) - but they married July 1839 in Rutherford County. They had several children in NC then went to Murray County, GA where they show up in the 1850 census. Living next door is a McEntire.

This is the family found in the 1850 Murray County, GA census:

Jesse Morrison, age 43 born NC
Mary, age 36 born NC
Andrew 10
Martha J. 8
John C. 7 (MY gr gr grandfather!!)
Samuel 5
Margaret 3
Mary A 2
Sarah A 1

[ Next door, there is a John Morrison, age 34, born NC, married to a “Sofrina ?”, age 23 with children Adolphus age 3 and Elisha age 1. A brother perhaps? But strange names, so I wouldn't bet on it. .]

Jesse would have been 32 at the time of this 1839 marriage to Mary Elliott, which makes me wonder if he had married previously. But I can’t find a Jesse in the Head of Household census records and there were no stepchildren in the household in 1850. So maybe they were just late bloomers.

Since Jesse named his first son Andrew, I'm now wondering if I might be looking for an Andrew in his father. Jesse was born 1807. So his father in born in the 1700's. Jesse was born in NC - that may not be western NC however. My problem is that the early censuses are all 1's and 0's. Without knowing anything about Jesse's family, how do I go about placing him w/ a Head of Household in a particular census? Am I going to have to get lucky and find a will or something?

I do know the Morrisons have always been good friends w/ the McEntires and Hemphills, two of the earliest settlers of Murray County, GA where Jesse landed. In fact, a McEntire lived next door to Jesse Morrison in the 1850 Murray Co., GA census. The McEntires and Hemphills are also very present in the Burke/McDowell/Rutherford/ area of NC. I visted Carson House last weekend in McDowell county, but no real help. My next stop is the Burke county, NC library, which I understand has a wonderful "Carolina Room". But again, I'm not sure how to explore. All of my success so far has come w/ the easy stuff: census reports, vital records, etc. How do the "pro's" get it further back?

Any ideas appreciated in placing Jesse Morrison and Mary Elliott w/ families.

Oh - one other thing - someone here was interested in Watsons. I have seen somewhere recently that a John Watson was a bondsman for a couple of Morrison/McEntire/Hemphill marriages and witnessed a couple of land transfers for them. Interestingly enough, Jesse's grandson, also a Jesse, named his son John Watson Morrison.

Thanks again if you can help!
