U.S. States: North Carolina: Rutherford County
Dear Bill: My fourth great grandparents were William Williams and Nancy Middleton, and I am descended from them in two ways -- their son Walter was the father of Eliza Jane Williams, who was my father's great-grandmother on his mother's side. But Walter's son Jonas was my father's great-grandfather on his father's side.
I've only been researching awhile, but have spent some time in the Rutherford County Courthouse and nearby libraries. I show that Nancy Middleton died 27 July 1840 and that she was born between 1760 and 1765. I show that Williams Williams was born in 1757 in Brunswick County, VA and that he died 7 Sept 1834. I show that James Middleton was Nancy's father, no other facts. Their other children that I show in addition to Walter who was born in Rutherford County in 1801, were Leroy b. 1791, Andrew, Jonathan, b 1796, Margaret, and Elizabeth. Walter is buried in what was known as the Walter Williams Cemetery in Henderson County, but I don't think it's there anymore. You may want to widen your search to Henderson County -- both my father's mother and his father were born in Henderson County, as were three of his grandparents.
If your search turns up any other information, I'd be delighted to hear from you. It's really hard to find the right Williamses in all the Williams haystacks. I'll also be glad to send you whatever else I can find, since we're definitely cousins! Jeaneane Williams
