Avery Byron Carpenter was my great-uncle. His parents stayed in Rutherford County and are buried there. My grandfather was Samuel Houston Carpenter, Avery's brother. There were severalother siblings. He moved to Drew County as well, but later moved to Brooks Spur in Saline County, near Bryant and Bauxite. My mother, Veda Eura Carpenter was born there on November 9, 1913. She always referred to Avery as "Uncle By". One of the NC cousins put together a book, "Carpenters A-Plenty."
